Easy tips to clean a microfiber sofa

cleaning tips    Dec 19,2017

Microfiber sofas look like suede, but the fabric is made of polyester and nylon fibers 100 times thinner than a human hair. Sofa cleaning this space-age material can be a little tricky as microfiber is prone to watermarks. However, microfiber sofa cleaning with cool solvents or wash cushion covers helps remove the dirt without unsightly stains.

Vacuuming and Brushing

The tight-knit of densely compacted microfibers prevents impurities and allergens from getting into the fabric, but that does not mean you do not need to vacuum microfiber furniture regularly. Keep your microfiber sofa comfortable with a weekly vacuum - you cannot grind in the dirt that is not there. Use a pile padding accessory to remove dirt and brush the microfiber nap at the same time, which helps keep it soft. If you prefer to brush microfiber sofa cleaning on days when you do not vacuum, use a soft nylon scrub brush.

Rubbing Alcohol

Even though microfiber is designed to repulse water, spilling quickly helps prevent the pattern of revealing watermarks. Dry the liquid from your microfiber chair with a plain white cloth, press the cloth down and lift up instead of rubbing. A microfiber sofa cleaning use alcohol to get rid of stains and watermarks, fill a spray bottle with alcohol, spray the stain lightly and rub with a white or natural-coloured sponge. Allow the alcohol to air dry or accelerate the process with a dryer in the fresh setting. After drying, brush the stain with a dry nylon bristle brush.

Soap Suds

If your microfiber sofa is water resistant, rub it with soap and foam. Add a generous stream of dishwashing liquid to a large bowl and fill it with lukewarm water to make foam. Immerse a clean white cloth or a sponge without colouring in the foam, avoid the water and gently rub the sofa with a circular motion. Dry the foam with a dry white cloth. Work in sections to prevent the sofa from absorbing too much water. After scrubbing the entire sofa, brush it with a nylon bristle brush to mix and soften the fabric.

Before microfiber sofa cleaning, read its service instructions label. Microfiber manufacturers use codes to indicate how to clean the fabric. "W" means that the fabric is safe for water; "S" means sofa cleaning with a dry cleaning solvent; "S-W" means both solvent and water-safe, and "X" means dry brushing only. Rubbing alcohol can work on a microfiber furniture labeled "S", but always test it first in a discreet place. Never use bleach, acetone, carpet cleaner or upholstery cleaner on microfiber sofas. If you are unsure of sofa cleaning by yourself, make an appointment with a professional furniture cleaning service.
